When the latest Maybelline lip launch fell into my overeager paws, I immediately thought two things: this brand is on fire...and ooh, do we have some NARS dupes on our hands?
These pigment-packed, semi-matte and adorably short-arsed lip crayons are an absolute delight. Like the NARS Velvet Matte pencils, they're easier to apply than your regular bullet, and a whole lot more fun, besides - just colour between the lines!
The colours seem brighter here as I'm beside a window - see the bottom pic for a truer representation of shade. |
Now, compare Maybelline's Light It Up (top lip), to NARS Cruella (bottom), and you'll see they're not quite identical.
The Maybelline version feels slightly waxier, applies slightly glossier and isn't quite as long-lasting as the NARS. It also doesn't stain the lips in the same way, as the colour fades.
But it's pretty damn close - unless you were, say, a completely obsessed beauty blogger, you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.
And, even taking the size difference into account (the Maybelline ones are smaller), there are considerable savings to be made: we're talking €25 versus a weeny €6.49.
The texture is creamy, they don't drag on the lips and are comfortable to wear - just make sure to condition your lips overnight, with your favourite balm. And, just like the NARS pencils, these purse-friendly counterparts require sharpening; a minor annoyance, but easier to forgive when you're handed back change from a tenner.
10 shades of these are landing on September 1st but keep your eyes peeled as they may sneak in early to your local Boots or Superdrug. I have my eye on the other two reds in the mix, Fab Orange and Red Essential: could these be contenders for Red Square and Dragon Girl?
My fingers are crossed; are you tempted?
