Served at a civilised time, for reasonable prices, with the most delicious menu options and alcoholic breakfast beverages (!), brunch is the most cheering and sociable meal on the block. It’s casual yet indulgent, utterly uplifting and, since I discovered it in my early twenties, I have been brunching it up just as often as I can.
The Gibson’s Jazz Brunch has been on my radar since Rosemary’s review and I finally made it along the other week. The spacious and contemporary design (comfy couches, ridiculously high ceilings, amazing views over Dublin’s Docklands) makes for a buzzy brunch venue with menu options ranging from the traditional (pancakes, waffles) to slightly more exotic fare (spiced aubergine with a cauliflower and butternut sauce).
The use of seasonal produce was evident and a lovely touch - asparagus with everything, FTW! – and the cocktail list is a boozy bruncher’s dream, with classics like mimosas and Bloody Marys alongside your more adventurous tipples. I went for a Jasmine Cooler which combined, deliciously, Hendricks gin (from my home county in Scotland) with jasmine, rose, lemon and soda while himself – the designated driver – enjoyed a non-alcoholic mocktail with fresh raspberries, lime juice, orange blossom water and vanilla syrup (divine).
Foodwise, I plumped for eggs benedict while Mr Fluff picked roast beef; my eggs were delicious, in a piquant and plentiful hollandaise sauce, while his beef was melt-in-the-mouth tender and of very generous proportions. A stolen morsel of his Yorkshire pud revealed it to be light, fluffy and perfectly squishy with gravy.
Both were served with asparagus (see above!) and eaten to the pleasant strains of the contemporary jazz trio, who had an excellent female vocalist I could have listened to all day. And very nearly did.
