Going barefaced at the beach is one thing - but sometimes you want a little bit of warpaint for the workplace. Sliding eyebrows and smudged, creased shadow on a shiny face does no-one any favours, but it’s a look we’ve all sported as part of summer in the city.
To avoid it, you need some quick and easy beauty bits you can rely on in the sun: meltproof makeup that won’t slip and slide around your face, and haircare that looks good in the heat.

Some of my old reliables include a good cream shadow – one that won’t crease, but will set on the eye and stay there till you take it off that night. Made to withstand extreme weather conditions, Make Up For Ever do a brilliant line of waterproof products that include the Aqua Cream pots, €21.50 a pop, easy-to-use shadow pencils, €16.50, and brilliant little brow kit, €20 – find them in their Clarendon Street Store in Dublin or on mufe.ie.
I’m also loving Baalbek eye paint, €25, from NARS, which you first saw here – this is a really sultry dark bronze that’s gorgeous smudged all over the lid. It looks best when it’s a little bit lived in and stands up well to the heat.
Keeping some semblance of control over my hair in the humidity and heat is, to put it mildly, quite the challenge. Forget sleek and groomed – the best option, for me, is to work with its natural waves and embrace a more relaxed, laidback look. Beachy waves – courtesy of the Sea Salt texturising spray from Fudge Urban – are an easy option; I just spritz in while my hair’s damp, and allow to dry naturally.
To further fight the frizz, I’ve been turning to a recent launch from John Frieda. The brand’s new Frizz-Ease Nourishing Oil Elixir, €9.99, is enriched with argan oil and, applied to my mid-lengths and ends, keeps my hot hair looking manageable and healthy.
