Hot Spots: Bewleys George’s Street Café

ATT Coffee connoisseurs! Still searching for the best brew in town? You might want to check out Bewleys Café on George’s Street.

Forget your frothy cappuccinos (though they do those, too): differentiating themselves from the other Bewleys venues, the George’s Street café specialises in good old back-to-basics filtered coffee.

In fact, the whole concept of this cafe is getting back to basics, and connecting with the heritage of the company.  Lots of this has been forgotten in the mists of time but Bewleys was the first to import tea from Canton to Dublin, to introduce latte art to Ireland, to set up a dedicated barista academy and to roast their beans in store - in fact, they helped create coffee culture in Ireland as far back as 1840.

At a recent masterclass we got hopped up on caffeine and learned all about the different systems they have on site – you'll soon be able to take your pick from an aeropress, chemex or syphon brewer – and then choose your beans, on top!

Following an espresso martini – a heady but delicious blend of coffee, vodka and  tia maria – we got stuck into tasting and testing the various blends and brewing methods. Beans from Bolivia, Ethiopia and Panama proved to be surprisingly different – the Ethopian blend being light and almost fruity, while the others were richer and more full bodied.



We finished up with a latte art masterclass with Irish Latte Art Finalist, and Bewley’s Barista, Arvind, who made it look ridiculously to easy to create these intricate designs – until we had a bash of it ourselves…witness Mr Fluff's attempt below! 




On a side note – we took away some of the new espresso capsules, to which Mr Fluff has given a definite seal of approval. Nespresso compatible, you’ll find them in packs of 10 for €3.59.
