We arrived before the Irish temperatures spiked, so the open fires and luxe-but-cosy, manor house décor were just what the doctor ordered. Our room, one of 14 in the original 18th century mansion, was a beaut: we were loathe to leave it. But the purpose of my visit was to explore the Estuary Spa so, with himself occupied on the golf course, I spent a morning doing just that.
With four treatment rooms, a relaxation room, thermal suite and pool, the Estuary is small but perfectly formed. I found it warm and welcoming, like the rest of the hotel, and staffed by true professionals who very clearly know their stuff.
My knotted shoulders and twisted lower back were in desperate need of some attention, so I thought a massage was the way to go. But when reflexogy was suggested instead, I pushed my scepticism firmly to the side – at the very least, a foot rub was involved, and we all know how I feel about that.
The basic premise is that, through the feet, your reflexologist can identify and treat problems in other parts of your body. The treatment lasted an hour - one of the most pleasurable hours of my life to date.

As my entire body started to relax I felt two things happening at once: I became aware of stresses and strains I hadn’t previously known were there, and at the same time felt them start to melt away.
My feet were also in heaven – this was the massage of their life. Despite my intention to savour every firm but gentle stroke, I accidentally dozed off. I’d have been mad at myself if I wasn’t so wonderfully, perfectly relaxed.
Afterwards, my therapist mentioned a recent pain in my eye – it had inexplicably swollen just the week before – and explained that the tension in my shoulders was connected to the knot in my lower back. All aches were now relieved, and I was incredibly grateful and impressed.
But the pampering didn’t end there: next up was a facial with a new favourite spa range of mine – the Hungarian organic skincare line, Eminence (I’ve reviewed their face mask here).
With the most amazing scents and textures, combined with masterful massage techniques, this treatment passed in a blur of sensory pleasure. Afterwards, a quick peek in the mirror revealed smoother skin, clearer pores and that glorious post-treatment glow.
As we headed back to Dublin we agreed on these two things: there are few things as lovely and restorative as an Irish country house hotel – and it’s hard to find finer than Faithlegg. We’ll definitely be back.
