Katie Holmes at the 2013 Met Gala: Pretty In Punk

As a lover of punk, both the music and the style, I was interested in the theme for this year’s Met Ball – Punk: From Chaos to Couture. The event saw some edgy looks carried off with flair – Rooney Mara and Sarah Jessica Parker, I salute you - but it could also have been a recipe for disaster. Just ask Madonna, who had clearly raided her daughter’s dressing-up box…

Katie Holmes could have fallen into a similar trap – her style is as far removed from punk rock as you could imagine – so I was delighted to see her subtle interpretation of the theme.

She wore an ethereal white Francisco Costa gown and kept the emphasis on her impeccably made-up face, which had a rockier, smokier vibe than she usually wears.

Her look was created by Genevieve Herr for Bobbi Brown, who said:  “Katie’s MET Gala makeup was a departure from her natural look.  We took the traditional punk look of black eyes and white lips and modernized it by combining metallic shadow with black liner and lots of black mascara to create a winged smoked out eye, and finished the look with a bit of pale pink blush and a beige lip. Pretty in Punk.”
