Bright and punchy, a matte red lip is a look all on its own. It's the perfect distraction for when the rest of you is looking or feeling pretty blah - a quick swipe of an amazing lipstick can pull you together in seconds, and feels more modern and fresh than it's glossier sister.
Today's mattes aren't necessarily as full-on, show-stoppingly opaque as previous generations, but they're all the more wearable for that. Velvety soft, the best offerings feel creamy and moisturising without sacrificing on wear-time.
Favourites include the tomato-red hues of YSL's Rouge Pur Couture Mat in Orange Imagine, (4), €32 - this is the one I always bring with me on holidays, as it looks amazing with a tan.
I had to include two Rouge Allure Velvets by Chanel: I'm in love with this formula, and the ruby-toned La Precieuse (6), and more strawberry-hued La Malicieuse (2), both €31.50, have equally captured my heart. They're absolute beauties - read why here and here.
Revlon's Colorburst Matte Balm in Striking (5), €11.20, is another pretty, orangey-red that entirely deserves its name. The minty scent is divisive but I'm a fan - and the chunky crayon is effortless and fun.
I like both warm and cool reds and the deeper, blue-based tones of NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella (1), €25, are definitely kind to the teeth. I've waxed lyrical here so I won't go on, but these pencils are pretty much perfect.
Finally, with it's light, mousse-like texture, the new matte effect XXXL longlasting lipgloss from Essence in Silky Red (3) is well worth searching out - and it's a snip at just under three euro. I'm wearing it in this video.
